About Us :
The Swan Creek Library and Literacy Center is a partnership between the Tacoma Public Library and Tacoma Community House. Library patrons are able to check out books, magazines and other library materials, use the library's computers for research, and bring their families to storytimes. Unlike other Tacoma libraries, however, patrons will also be able to participate in classes designed to improve their literacy and language skills, obtain their GED, learn how to use a computer, or get after-school homework help.

Not everyone in the community has the basic skills necessary to use the library with ease - or to use other critical community resources. It's easy to understand how limited language or educational skills can be a tremendous roadblock to finding and using even the most basic information. The partnership with Tacoma Community House (which has significant experience working closely with persons with little or no English language and comprehension skills, or without significant education experiences) makes the tremendous resources of the Tacoma Public Library available to people who previously had little or no ability to use these resources.

The collection of library materials is focused on the needs of the Eastside community it serves, yet patrons can get books from anywhere within the library system. The Library increased the amount of materials available in the many languages spoken in the Swan Creek community, and which would support the Library's expanded role as a literacy and education center. The latest bestseller, popular viewing and reading materials for children and adults, and an expanded collection of 'how-to' books fill out the collection.
