History:
In the fall of 1956 Mrs. Florence Kuhlmann decided she was tired of taking her children to the Bedford Library to do their school assignments. She took it upon herself to explore ways to bring a branch library to the community of Solon. Mrs. Kuhlmann started her campaign by calling County Library Headquarters. Single-handedly she found out the correct procedure to follow in order to have a library in Solon. A library planning committee was formed and of course the chairman of the committee was Mrs. Kuhlmann.
On February 20, 1957 a plan for a library to be located in the Town Hall was presented by the committee to Cuyahoga County Public Library. The committee then had to search for a librarian to head the branch. Anne Maroush, a resident of Solon, just about to graduate from Western Reserve University with a library degree, was chosen. July 23, 1957 the Solon Branch opened with five hundred books. Maple Heights Regional Library helped by loaning Solon 2000 books.
Gradually a Friends Groupof the Solon Library formed. They were very aware that a building was needed to house the growing library. Again, after much planning, the Solon Branch was built on Inwood Road. Donald Butler, who was President of the Friends at the time, was master of ceremonies at the dedication on March 8, 1968.
Thirty years later, as the population of the town of Solon and library circulation continued to increase, the community outgrew the Inwood location. Once more a committee headed by Edward Augustine, was formed to begin plans for a new location and building to house a library. The library committee, the Friends Group, staff, and manager Janet Everett worked together to bring a new library to the community. The library is Western Reserve in style and twice the size of the Inwood location. The Solon Branch at the Portz Parkway location was dedicated September 10,1998. The library is an outstanding landmark in the City of Solon. It will serve the community for many years to come.
