Mission Statement

The mission of the Skowhegan Free Public Library is to serve as a lifelong center of learning for residents of all ages from Skowhegan and surrounding communities.

By providing free and equal access to books, periodicals, audio cassettes, DVDs, large print books, computer-based resources, and other services, the library helps to support an informed, educated, self-reliant and productive citizenry. It also provides material for recreational reading including current and high-demand publications in a variety of formats for the enjoyment of people of all ages. The intent of the institution is to encourage and promote diversity, tolerance, and freedom of thought and belief.

The library offers educational and cultural experiences through its programs and exhibits, serves as an inter-library access point, and provides a reasonable variety of up-to-date reference resources. It encourages independent learning by providing facilities for self-determined and self-paced study on a wide variety of subjects.

The library is arranged to promote and encourage use of its entire collection and facilities by means of accessible shelves, good signage, casual seating, and a genealogy room which has a collection of books and information relating to the area.

Although area schools maintain good library facilities, the Skowhegan Free Public Library serves as an additional resource for school-aged children. The Children's Room includes a safe and inviting space with easily accessible materials. Special programs are provided for children throughout the year.
