Our library is small, but our primary mission is to be of service to the community.
Shepherdstown Public Library has only provided a minimum of reference service to patrons in the past, due largely to the "smallness factor": small library, small budget. Now because of advances in technology, we have the potential capability of helping our patrons locate information in house, instead of having to refer them to Shepherd College Library, or Martinsburg Public Library.
Patrons are able to access the internet with the almost unlimited information it affords, and the West Virginia Library Commission has obtained grants for their "Infomine" project to enable all of the libraries in the state, public and academic, to be linked in an electronic network. The Gates Foundation has provided grants to enable the library to provide additional Internet access and a full range of educational software to the public. We currently have a small collection of CD-ROMS available for patrons to use in the library.
