The Shawnee Public Library first opened in 1905. The library was later destroyed by a fire in 1927, and re-opened three years later in 1930. The Shawnee Public Library became part of the Pioneer Library System when Pottawatomie county joined the system in 1976. The current Shawnee Public Library building was opened in 1989.
