Our History
In 1956, the Albany Study Club seeing the need, decided to sponsor the library as a long range project. With a modest beginning of books donated by members and friends of club members, the library was open to the public in a vacant room in the county courthouse. After outgrowing the space allocated to it by the Commissioners Court, the library moved into a larger room in the County Courthouse which also housed the Welfare office.
In September 1961, the Commissioners Court purchased a red brick colonial type building which has been the Southwestern Bell Telephone office. After some changes, repairs, redecorating, and installation of shelves this became the new library located at 402 N. 2nd Street. In the beginning, the ladies of the Study Club alternated in keeping the library open, and they have been responsible for the success of the library. Then in 1964, the club hired a Librarian.
A library committee of seven members is appointed by the Study Club. The library is open 20 hours a week, Monday through Friday 1- 5 p.m. Our library continues to thrive and looks forward to serving the people of Shackelford County.
