Searcy County Library

202 East Main Street

History:

The main library building was dedicated in 1961. The majority of the construction funds coming from Jim G. Ferguson, Sr. Mr. Ferguson decided to make a public library a priority when it was reported that our public school libraries had failed to meet state accreditation. Jim G. was quoted as saying: "The kids here (S.C.) are just as smart as anywhere, all they need is an opportunity." This statement made in 1961 is just as true today.

Jim G. and his wife, the former Hattie Maude Mays, continued their support of the library until his death in 1978, and since that time his children and grandchildren have continued the legacy.

In 2004 a progressive library board in response to community support, increasing usage, and looking to the future needs of Searcy county began to explore the possibility of a building expansion. After months of preliminary investigation, plans were drawn, and bid ads were placed. In February of 2005 the construction began on an additional 4,500 sq. ft. of library space, using funds from the Ferguson Family Trust, and the Mays Foundation. Included in this addition are an expanded genealogy reference and study area, newspaper/magazine area, and presentation room. Plans are also underway for a memorial garden.
