In 1958 the voters of Dallas approved $1 million in bonds to build two new branches (Pleasant Grove and Walnut Hill) and to acquire sites for 4 more (South Oak Cliff, Hampton-Illinois, Casa View and Preston Royal).
On April 24, 1963 city officials and other dignitaries held groundbreaking ceremonies for four branch libraries in one day. The four branches (South Oak Cliff, Hampton-Illinois, Preston Royal and Casa View) were authorized in the 1962 Capital Improvement Bond Program.
In May 1963 construction started on a branch library for north Dallas on Royal Lane two blocks west of the Preston Royal Shopping Centers. All four branches opened in 1964. Preston Royal opened its doors on March 31, 1964.
Preston Royal celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary during the week of May 12-16, 1990 with a rededication ceremony on Saturday, May 12. Patrick M. O'Brien, the director of the libraries, opened the ceremony. Also in attendance were Boy Scout Troop #577; Charles S. Hastings from Central Congregational Church; Hillcrest Jazz Band Ensemble and Orchestra; John F. Scovell, chairman of Woodbine Development Corporation. Mayor Annette Strauss cut the ribbon rededicating the library.
The library went through a renovation in 1989, and was closed briefly in December 1992 to expand its children's area. In 1995-6 the children's area was completely remodeled. This was done in response to the growing number of young children in the area using the library.
Preston Royal celebrated 30 years in March 2000. The month-long activities included a birthday party, films for children, a presentation of Stranger Danger for parents by the Dallas Police Department Crime Prevention specialist and a display of needlework from the Dallas Needlework and Textile Guild.
