The beginning of library service in the Polk-Wisdom area was in 1960 with a weekly bookmobile stop in the Polk Terrace area. The demand was so heavy that another stop was added at Polk South in 1967. The need for full-time library service having been demonstrated, the Polk-Wisdom branch library was approved by the voters in the 1967 Crossroads Bond program. Groundbreaking was on December 20, 1969.
Dedication ceremonies for the new Polk-Wisdom Branch Library were held November 23, 1970. Over 200 enthusiastic Oak Cliff residents attended the ceremonies for the $715,000 facility at 7151 Library Lane. The 30-minute ceremony was described as the "biggest turnout" for opening a branch library by Arthur A. Smith, President of the Dallas Public Library Board of Trustees.
