The Pelion Branch Library began as a bookmobile stop in 1973. As usage increased, the library moved into its first fixed location, which was the parsonage of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Ruth Nichols was the first branch manager from 1983 to 1991. As the need for more space became evident, a renovated Sweet potato-curing house was made available to the library in 1987.
The library shared this building with Town Hall. A unique feature was a Southern Railroad caboose used as a reading room. Shirley Sprenne was appointed branch manager in 1991, and in 1999 plans were begun to build a new building for the growing branch.
The new Pelion Branch Library opened in June 2000. Located on Hwy. 302, it is a 6,000 ft² building with plenty of shelving, reading areas and study tables, computers for Internet access, a bright and colorful children's area, and a meeting room for library and community use. The staff consists of one full time professional librarian, one full time Circulation LA1, one part-time youth services programmer, and two part-time Circulation LA1's.
The library is open 40 hours a week, including Thursday evenings and Saturdays. It also has a Friend's of the Library used book area and a display area for exhibits. Some of the special collections available include a parenting collection, holiday books, Christian fiction, large print, and science fiction/fantasy
