In June 1939, a group of women organized a library in Brookneal and named it the Patrick Henry Memorial Library, after the famous orator, politician, and Virginia native. The library occupied the left wing of the Brookneal Community Building, for a total of 500 square feet. All books and materials were donated, and funds were scarce. In 1942, the Library Association deeded the library to the town of Brookneal, but the town didn't officially recognize and establish the library until 1948.
Campbell County Public Library assumed operation of the library on August 10, 1982. Library Director Elizabeth Hamilton encouraged Brookneal citizens to build a new library. Instead of building, however, in 1990, the county purchased the former Holland Furniture Building on Lynchburg Avenue in Brookneal, increasing library space by 4,000 square feet. After extensive renovations, an Open House was held in February 1992, and the library was automated the following year.
