The Mohawk Valley Library System is a cooperative public library system serving the fourteen independent public libraries of Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, and Schoharie counties. The system is governed by a twelve member Board of Trustees representing the four counties of our service area. (See board meeting schedule below.) One of twenty-three public library systems in New York State, MVLS operates under a state approved Plan of Service. (PDF file)
The mission of the Mohawk Valley Library System is to "coordinate, strengthen, and stimulate public library and information services in Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady and Schoharie counties."
MVLS provides a variety of services to enhance public library services in the region. Staff offers consultant and advisory assistance, delivery, inter-library loan, materials through a pool or rotating collections, public relations materials, and web-based informational resources on the MVLS web site, www.mvls.info. Continuing education workshops and opportunities are offered regularly. Reference services are provided member libraries and the public by the Schenectady County Public Library, Central Library for the system. In addition, federal, state, and other grants are pursued to expand library services. Staff assistance is also available to member libraries in seeking alternative funding.
Mohawk Valley Library System and Southern Adirondack Library System provide automated services to member libraries through the Joint Automation Project. This partnership has enhanced resource sharing in eight counties and increased services to library users, providing access to 57 libraries with just one card. Access to informational databases is also available through the Joint Automation Project.
