‹The Johnstown Public Library first opened in 1957 as a branch of the Newark Public Library. It was originally located within a single room of the Town Hall at the Monroe Township House. In 1995, Mary E. Babcock provided funding for the project to purchase land to construct a brand new, modern facility to accommodate the growth and demand of the Johnstown community. The new Mary E. Babcock Library opened in early 2006 with 4 times the floor space and 3 times more computers than before.
‹Additionally, the Mary E Babcock Foundation has worked to digitize the Johnstown Independent newspaper. The scope of the project includes the Johnstown Independent from June 14, 1884 through December of 2007, with the exception of 1899 which has no known copies.
