History
Marina library was the fourth branch to be renovated under the Branch Library Improvement Program. This neighborhood treasure closed on Sept. 2, 2005 to undergo a major renovations. It reopened on August 4th, 2007, with a new enclosed glass reading area, new browsing area, a revamped children’s room, designated teen area and new public restrooms. The library is now seismically safe, fully accessible and technologically updated with new computers and free WiFi access to the Internet. Project costs totaled $3.9 million.
Marina Branch Library was the 23rd branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system. The original branch building was designed by the architectural firm of Appleton & Wolfard and was featured in the September 1955 issue of Architectural Record magazine. It was built at a cost of $156,742. An additional $12,926 was spent on equipment and furniture. The building was opened to the public on June 16, 1954, and formally dedicated on August 11, 1954.
