History:
Lois Wilson Anderson organized the first Marble Falls Library in 1948 in the back of Boxell & Hartzell's Department store. It was considered a branch of the Burnet County Library but sponsored locally. In 1951 the growing Marble Falls Library relocated to an upstairs balcony of the Barnes Lumber Company.The Masonic Lodge housed the library from 1953 until it moved to its own 4500 square foot home at 801 4th Street in 1974. Creative fund raisers took place to support the library.
Marble Falls Library Trivia:
1955 the fine policy was 1¢ per day and it was open Tuesday and Thursday from 3-6 pm and Saturdays from 2-6 pm.
1956 the library added a museum.
In 1958 volunteers produced a play "Ladies of the Jury" that ran for 2 nights to capacity crowds and raised $214.66.
In 1962 the play "The Vigil" netted $102.55.
In 1965 the Episcopal church women organized the first of many rummage sales.
In 1965 an overdue library book list was posted in the library, and a notice in the newspaper advised parents to check the list.
January 1997 Library holdings, circulation and public access catalogs are automated (computerized).
September 1997, library moves into current 15,200 square foot building at 101 Main.
Old library building becomes the Library Thrift Store.
Patrons can renew and place holds online from home.
2003 Self Checkout available for interested patrons.
2004 Automated Public Internet Reservation system implemented, 2005 Black/ White and Color printing available by selection, and paid via vend machine.
