Mission
In developing a new mission statement, the Library staff and the Planning Committee reviewed the existing mission statement and examined mission statements from other libraries and major U.S. corporations. It was agreed that the Library's mission statement should be an enduring statement of purpose that identifies the scope of its operations and reflects its values and priorities. This new mission statement was designed to guide the Library in making consistent decisions, to motivate its stakeholders in developing an organizational unity, and to integrate its short-term objectives, longer-term goals, and service responses. It also clarifies the direction of the Library, and provides a reference point from which specific strategies can be assessed and progress can be measured.
The Louisville Public Library is committed to providing its citizens:
The benefit and pleasure of learning and discovery through its collections, services, and staff;
Access to and assistance in using emerging technologies which serve as a gateway to information resources within and beyond our walls;
Quality service demonstrating respect for the individual and fidelity to the principles of democracy; and
A pleasing, comfortable, and safe setting in which library collections and customer service are readily accessible.
