The original library was located at 188 South Third Street ( the old Seaboldt homestead ) same being purchased by the Lehighton Lions Club on April 1, 1947, for the sum of $10,600.00. A Library Association was formed at that time and the committee went before the School Board for support. The first funds were raised by a collection in the theaters and this was the starting point in the purchase of books. To assist with the additional cost of books, interested citizens and clubs began purchasing memorials. For remodeling and repairs, the Lions spent an additional $3,432.08 making their total investment $14,032.08. On Autust 14, 1948 ( the anniversary of VJ Day ), the library officially opened and it has been in continous operation serving the people of the area as a memorial to the men who died for their country.
Within fifteen years the original site was practically bursting at the seams. Through the generosity of Don & Sam Miller of the Call-Chronicle Newspapers, the present site of the library at 124 North Street was donated in honor of their father, David Miller, a former Lehighton resident. Additional property was also donated by Mr & Mrs Edward Mandour.
The library was completed and opened in June 1966, during the Centennial Celebration. Books were moved by a human chain stretching from the olf library site on Third Street to the new location.
On June 20, 1995, the Lehighton Memorial Library changed it's name to Lehighton Area Memorial Library. In August of 1998 the Library celebrated it's 50th Year Anniversary. Past and present board members and staff were recognized at a banquet at Mahoning Valley Country Club. A presentation was done at the Amphitheater in town to celebrate 50 years of continuous operation serving the people of the area as a memorial to the men who died for our country.
