Highlawn Branch Library

1664 W. 13th St. at Kings Highway

History:

Highlawn Library features a circular main room with walls of glazed block in a variety of colors, a design departure for Brooklyn libraries. The branch was renovated in 2005 & 2006, with new carpeting and enhanced lighting to make the building brighter and more inviting. The toddler area features special seating and computers for children up to five years old.

Highlawn Library serves Bensonhurst, one of Brooklyn’s most diverse communities. Immigrants from Russia, China, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan and Mexico have settled in the area over the past several decades. Highlawn’s immediate neighborhood is largely residential, with private homes and small apartment buildings, but there are small businesses, professional offices, community centers and religious institutions nearby. The branch is not far from a bustling commercial area on 86th Street.

Highlawn is beloved by children and families. The Toddler Time program is a big draw, perhaps the branch’s most popular offering. Highlawn serves students from many local schools, including Seth Low Intermediate School, Success Academy of Bensonhurst and two local Yeshivas.
