In 1962, a small group of Venice citizens, including author Walter Farley and his wife Rosemary, established the Friends of the Venice Public Library, Inc. The Friends determined to "foster the establishment and sound, long-range support of the most outstanding public library service possible for the Venice area".
Within three years, the Friends had received contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations to fund the construction of a new library. The City of Venice provided the land and the County of Sarasota furnished operating expenses. The Venice Public Library opened to the public on October 4, 1965.
The Friends remain active in their support for the library in the roles of both library advocate and fundraiser. We help to fund expansions, capital improvements, equipment, furnishings, programs and materials.
