Our Mission:

The mission of the Friends of the Monterey Public Library is to support the Board of Trustees in obtaining its goals and objectives and accomplishing its mission. In particular, the Friends will work to fulfill the goal of community involvement. The Friends will provide broad outreach to the entire spectrum of residents and potential library customers, and will help promote library function and special event. A major objective for Friends will be to raise funds which can be utilized to supplement basic, existing library services.

As a member of the FRIENDS of the Monterey Public Library, you can help us support and strengthen our own very special library. In today's increasingly complex society, libraries are more important than ever.
As a department of the City, the Monterey Public Library is solidly supported. However, there are always special needs that can't or shouldn't be met with public funding alone. To address these needs, a group of community leaders has come together to form the FRIENDS of the Monterey Public Library. Projects include:

-Furnishing the California History Room in period style
-Fundraising for adult programs
-Providing lighting and window treatments for the California  History Room
-Furnishing the children's section in age-appropriate, child-friendly style
-Purchasing a portable sound system and portable exhibit  "booth"
-Presenting two awards to recognize student scholarship during the Lyceum's Monterey History Day
-Presenting two awards to recognize student scholarship for the Monterey Countywide High School Poetry Contest
-Providing books, audio books, DVDs and other library materials
-Funding other items on the MPL staff's wish list
