History:
On the brink of a new century and a new millennium, it is reassuring to look back at the road we've traveled. The group of mothers who began the first library in Fort Lee could hardly have envisioned that eighty-one years later, the seed they planted would become today's Fort Lee Public Library. The growth of the Library has mirrored the growth of the Borough, indeed, the growth of the concept of a public library. From a collection of books in a schoolroom at Number 2 school to a dontated former real estate office then the top floor of Borough Hall; in 1971, a new building at 320 Main Street to the present building with a 9,000 square foot addition in 1999, the Library has kept pace with its dynamic community and with the complex nature of information.
The new expansion has afforded us the room to develop new media and new technology and we have it all now; from CD-ROM to the Internet, DVDs and a word processor, you can find it in Fort Lee. With all this technology, though, we haven't lost sight of what those civic-minded women knew back in 1919. The most important resource a library has is its people. The staff of the Fort Lee Library are exceptional in giving our patrons library service. The Library Board and administration share this service philosophy. What makes the Fort Lee Library special is our unique mix of books, media, technology, and the human equation. It's like no other place around.
