The Florissant Public Library opened in rooms above the Citizen's Bank of Florissant, 699 St. Francois, with a donated collection of 1,005 books. In 1942, the City took over operation of the library. In the fall of 1955, the library moved to new quarters in the Florissant City Hall. Although recently constructed, the building soon proved too small for the growing library. In 1959, the library moved to the renovated former City Hall and Fire Station.
In February of 1964 A new library building was under construction. In July of 1964 the City of Florissant Public Library merged with the St. Louis County Library District and circulated 197,961 items.
In the 1970s, programs such as Kaleidoscope, Thursday Morning Storytime and women's programs kept the staff busy and involved with the community. These were the boom years for the branch. The population of the community was at it's highest and 650,000 materials circulated each year. The library supported the Hazelwood School District by teaching library skills to each of it's 6th grade classes.
From 1977 to 1989, microfilm catalogs were introduced. The population leveled off. McDonnell Douglas had a major lay-off and the library responded by bringing its business reference collection to the attention of job seekers.
In 1990, the Internet was offered to patrons plus WEBPAC classes on how to access the library's Catalog online. Florissant Valley Branch underwent a major renovation, 12,000 square feet were added.
