Chowchilla Branch Library

300 Kings Avenue

History
The Chowchilla Branch Library was established on May 13, 1913. Florence Dougherty was the first "custodian", the term used to designate the person in charge. The present adobe building was completed in 1941 and is reputed to be the last WPA project in Madera County. The furniture for the Library was made at San Quentin prison in 1941.
Currently a building project is underway to convert the former bowling alley at 300 Kings Avenue into a new, spacious branch. Much of the credit will belong to the Friends of the Chowchilla Branch Library and the people of Chowchilla for all the dedication and support they've provided.
