The Babcock Library is the result of a generous bequest of one of the sons of the Town of Ashford: Archibald Babcock, Esq. [1780-1862]. Having achieved success as a brewer in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Mr. Babcock never forgot his hometown and laid the foundations of a free public library through his gift. The Town gave custodial care to Mr. Davis A. Baker and charged him with the purchase of the initial collection. The Babcock Library officially opened in 1866, in the Warrenville General Store with approximately one hundred volumes. By 1873, the Town appointed Peter Platt as Librarian at a salary of $10 for the first year. Under Mr. Platt's charge, the collection quickly grew to an astounding 2,000 volumes. By 1885, he erected an addition to his home which would hold nearly 6,000 volumes. With the dedication of the Town Hall on September 27, 1924, the Babcock Library found a permanent home.
