The Auburn Area Branch of the Bay County Library System serves the western portion of the county, including the City of Auburn and Williams Township. It came into existence in 1973 and was originally located in a section of the school library at Western High School. Approximately three years later, a modular unit was donated and the library began full operation in the spring in rather cramped quarters. (10,000 books packed into less than 1,000 square feet!). Library service was offered from this facility for seven years. In 1984, a new 5,300 sq ft building replaced the modular unit. After 20 more years of growth, and thanks to a county-wide library improvement program millage, the current 15,000 square foot building opened on January 15, 2004. The branch offers a varied collection of general interest books, CDs, magazines, audio books, DVDs and videos for all ages, as well as a community room which is available for meetings of area groups and organizations. Access to the internet as well as to several online databases is available.
